Vice President Vance to Visit Greenland With Wife Despite Local Backlash
Vice President JD Vance announced that he will accompany his wife, Usha, and a high-level U.S. delegation to Greenland later this week—despite opposition from local authorities.
“Usha’s visit to Greenland on March 28 is going to be an exciting trip. I’ve decided not to let her have all the fun, so I’ll be going with her,” Vance posted on X (formerly Twitter) on March 25.
Vance said the trip would include a visit to Pituffik Space Base, home to the U.S. Space Force’s 821st Space Base Group. He added that he plans to meet with American service members stationed there and assess the broader security landscape of Greenland.
According to Vance, the autonomous island territory of Denmark has become a “top target for adversarial nations” and poses a growing threat to both the U.S. and Canada. He criticized past U.S. administrations and Denmark for “underestimating Greenland’s strategic importance.”
“The message from President Donald Trump is clear: We want to restore security for the people of Greenland because it matters to global security,” the vice president said.
A Controversial Visit
The White House had previously announced that Second Lady Usha Vance would lead a U.S. delegation to Greenland from March 27–29 to visit cultural sites, explore the island’s heritage, and attend the annual Avannaata Qimussersu—a traditional dogsled race in the region.
Joining the trip will be National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Waltz and Wright are also expected to visit Denmark.
President Trump said on March 24 that the delegation had been “invited by many people in Greenland” and that the visit was meant to “send a message of friendship” to the island’s residents.
However, Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede pushed back, saying his government never invited the U.S. delegation. Egede called the visit a “provocative and dangerous show of force.”
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, leader of the Demokraatit party, which just won Greenland’s general election, accused the U.S. of disregarding the will of the Greenlandic people.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also voiced concerns, suggesting the visit may be linked to Trump’s renewed push to bring Greenland under U.S. control, an idea he has floated repeatedly since returning to office in January.
