VP Vance Fires Rifle, Artillery During Marine Corps Base Visit
Vice President JD Vance fired multiple weapons—including a howitzer—and praised America’s “reborn patriotism” during a visit to Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia on March 26, marking a highly symbolic return to his military roots.
Wearing a cap emblazoned with “Once a Marine, Always a Marine,” Vance delivered remarks to active-duty personnel, served lunch in the mess hall, and joined Marines at the table for a meal. “It’s good to be home,” the Vice President said to applause.
At the firing range, Vance tested several weapons, including the M240 machine gun, M27 infantry rifle, and the M107 sniper rifle, before firing a round from a U.S. howitzer. He also observed the test flight of an experimental drone being evaluated for future battlefield use.
“No More Quotas”
During his speech, Vance emphasized the administration’s shift away from previous Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies in the military—policies he described as “outdated and divisive.” The Trump administration has criticized DEI as discriminatory, arguing it prioritizes identity over ability.
“No more quotas, no more vague promises, no more DEI training,” Vance declared. “Real strength—and real diversity—means Marines from every walk of life, every corner of America, united with one goal: to win every battle this country enters.”
A Personal Connection
Vance enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating high school in 2003, serving as a military journalist with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. He deployed to Iraq in 2005, documenting operations through photos and field reports. His military background remains central to his political image.
The visit to Quantico was both personal and policy-focused. Vance highlighted that every branch of the U.S. military has hit its recruitment goals since President Donald Trump returned to office in January. He pledged historic investments in the Marine Corps.
“We’re going to invest over $1 trillion to rebuild America’s weapons manufacturing base,” Vance said. “Every Marine who goes into battle will carry the finest weapons in the world—American-made, battle-tested, and second to none.”
The White House said the visit was part of the administration’s broader effort to strengthen ties with service members and reassert traditional military values.
