Washington State Activates National Guard to Prevent Election Violence

The Governor of Washington State has put members of the National Guard on standby to respond to any election-related violence.

“Based on the information we have and concerns about potential violence or other illegal actions tied to the 2024 election, I want to ensure we are fully prepared,” Governor Jay Inslee announced on November 1. He has called for the National Guard to assist law enforcement and state patrols as needed to control election-related disturbances.

Major General Gent Welsh, who oversees 8,000 members of the Washington National Guard, will decide how many will be activated and ready between November 4 and November 7, according to the Governor's office. Washington, a traditionally Democratic state, is expected to strongly support Vice President Kamala Harris over Republican candidate Donald Trump. The University of Florida’s Election Research Center reports that over two million residents have already voted early.

The FBI is investigating the arson of ballot drop boxes in Oregon and Washington, which local officials have condemned as “political violence” and an “attack on American democracy.”

With this year’s election expected to be extremely tight and tense, U.S. election officials and poll workers have implemented unprecedented security measures. In Cobb County, Georgia, poll workers have emergency alert buttons and direct lines to local police. In Durham County, North Carolina, bulletproof glass has been installed at polling stations. In Los Angeles, California, K-9 units inspect mail-in ballots to ensure they are free of hazardous substances.
