Who Is the Suspect in the Assassination of the US Insurance CEO?

Luigi Mangione, the suspect accused of fatally shooting Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, grew up in a wealthy family, attended a top-tier university in the US, and had no prior criminal record.

US authorities on December 9 identified 26-year-old Luigi Mangione as the primary suspect in the assassination of Brian Thompson, which occurred last week in Manhattan, New York. Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania after being recognized by a McDonald’s employee who identified him from police-issued photos.

Investigative sources revealed that Mangione attended a prestigious Ivy League school, came from a prosperous family, and had posted content advocating violence on social media.

Mangione's LinkedIn profile indicates that he worked as a data engineer at TrueCar, a California-based online car sales platform. His criminal record is virtually clean, save for a minor infraction in December 2023 when he was fined for trespassing at the Nuuanu Pali lookout in Hawaii. Mangione was raised in Towson, near Baltimore, Maryland, where his affluent family owns several businesses, including the Hayfields Country Club.

He graduated as valedictorian from Gilman, a top private school in Baltimore, in 2016. Former classmates described him as intelligent, approachable, and always smiling.

"He always seemed like a bright, well-adjusted guy who made all the right choices. There was never any indication of anything unusual," a former classmate told Fox.

Mangione later attended the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania, earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science in 2020. A now-deleted article from the university’s website, archived online, highlights Mangione’s leadership in guiding a group of 60 students on video game development projects. On Instagram, Mangione often shared travel photos from destinations like Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii, as well as images showcasing his athletic physique. He also appeared in celebratory posts with Phi Kappa Psi, an exclusive fraternity at the University of Pennsylvania.

Mangione also posed for photos at Stanford University, California. However, Stanford clarified that Mangione was not a graduate but had served as a lead counselor for a pre-college program from May to September 2019, teaching high school students about artificial intelligence.

Mangione had been on the run for five days after Thompson was shot multiple times in a street ambush in New York City. The high-profile case shocked the nation, prompting law enforcement to deploy significant resources and advanced technology to track him down. News of Mangione's arrest quickly sparked widespread attention online, with his social media accounts seeing a surge in activity as people sought to uncover potential motives behind his attack on the insurance executive.

One of Mangione's online profiles featured an X-ray image of a spine with screws, set as his header image. Sources close to Mangione reported that he suffered from chronic back pain. R.J. Martin, a former roommate in Honolulu in 2022, recalled that Mangione would occasionally be bedridden for weeks due to pain after surfing sessions. Mangione reportedly underwent spinal surgery in 2023.

A Reddit account matching Mangione's background mentioned he had suffered from spondylolisthesis since childhood, with worsening pain after a surfing accident. Weeks after discussing his condition, the account updated followers about undergoing successful spinal surgery.

Although no direct mention of UnitedHealthcare was made in these posts, Mangione's medical history is being scrutinized for potential links to disputes over insurance claims. CNN, citing investigative sources, reported that police had seized notes from Mangione containing phrases like, "These parasites got what they deserved."

Mangione publicly commented on Industrial Society and Its Future, a manifesto by Ted Kaczynski, also known as the "Unabomber," who carried out a series of bombings in the US between 1978 and 1995 to protest technological advancements. Mangione criticized Kaczynski’s methods but praised the manifesto as "ahead of its time."

"It's lazy and shallow to dismiss this work as the ravings of a madman while ignoring the uncomfortable truths it reveals about modern society," Mangione wrote on Goodreads, a social network for book enthusiasts.

He even expressed a degree of understanding for Kaczynski’s actions, suggesting that violence could be a form of "survival when all other forms of communication fail."

NYPD Detective Chief Joseph Kenny stated it was too early to determine Mangione's motives but noted the suspect left potential clues. At the scene of Thompson’s murder, police recovered three shell casings engraved with the words "deny," "defend," and "depose." These inscriptions bear similarities to the title of a 2010 book critical of the insurance industry: Delay, Deny, Defend – Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay and What You Can Do About It.

The book critiques insurance practices, and investigators are exploring whether Mangione was influenced by its content or intended the inscriptions as a broader condemnation of the industry.

The engraved casings led police to suspect Mangione harbored resentment toward the insurance sector and possibly Thompson personally.

"We have not determined a specific motive yet," Detective Kenny said. "But based on the messages left at the scene and the victim's occupation, this could potentially involve a disgruntled employee or a dissatisfied customer. We are considering all possibilities without drawing conclusions at this stage."
