U.S. President Donald Trump and several world leaders have congratulated Friedrich Merz and the CDU/CSU alliance on their election victory in Germany.
"Like in the U.S., the people of Germany have had enough of the ridiculous agendas that have existed for years, especially on energy and immigration. This is a great day for Germany," Trump wrote on Truth Social on February 23.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also extended his congratulations on X, celebrating the CDU/CSU's parliamentary win. "We look forward to continuing our cooperation with Germany to protect lives, bring peace closer to Ukraine, and strengthen Europe," Zelensky stated. He also emphasized that Europe must be capable of defending itself, advancing its industry, and achieving strategic goals.
French President Emmanuel Macron called for unity during uncertain times, saying, "Now more than ever, we must be determined to achieve great things together for France and Germany. We must work for a strong and sovereign Europe. We must stand united to face major global and continental challenges."
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed the opportunity to enhance mutual security, saying, "I look forward to working with the new government to strengthen our already strong relationship and drive economic growth for both nations."
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stressed the importance of increased European defense spending, writing on X, "I look forward to working with you at this crucial time for our collective security. Europe must raise its defense budget, and Friedrich Merz’s leadership will be key."
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis hailed the German election outcome as a "decisive victory" for both Germany and Europe. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala expressed hopes for collaboration to "build a stronger Europe together."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also welcomed the election results and expressed his desire to further strengthen the partnership between Israel and Germany.
Germany’s New Leadership Path
The CDU/CSU, led by Friedrich Merz, secured over 28% of the vote, according to election projections on February 23 (early February 24 Hanoi time). This result defeated both the ruling SPD of Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the far-right AfD, positioning Merz as Germany’s next chancellor.
Before taking office, Merz must form a coalition government, a process he has pledged to complete by April 20.
