Xi Jinping Unlikely to Attend Trump’s Inauguration

Xi Jinping is reportedly not accepting the invitation to attend Donald Trump’s inauguration in Washington, instead sending a high-level delegation from Beijing to the event.

CNN, citing two sources familiar with the matter, reported on December 12 that a senior Chinese delegation will attend the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, scheduled for January 20, 2025, at the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Previously, Karoline Leavitt, the incoming White House press secretary, confirmed that Trump had extended an invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the ceremony. When asked if Xi had accepted the invitation, Leavitt stated that the matter "is yet to be determined." The Chinese Embassy in Washington said it had no information to share.

Yun Sun, director of the China program at the Stimson Center, a Washington-based think tank, suggested that Xi would likely skip the inauguration to "avoid potential complications" related to the guest list. Sun noted that during President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021, Taiwan's representative to the U.S. was invited. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly warned the U.S. that this is a red line not to be crossed. Sun also argued that if Trump imposes tariffs of up to 60% on Chinese goods immediately upon taking office, as he has threatened, Xi’s attendance would become "unacceptable for Beijing."

China’s decision to send a high-level delegation to Trump’s inauguration is viewed as an olive branch, signaling support for the new administration. However, sources emphasized that the event is still six weeks away and plans could change.

While ambassadors and diplomats are typically invited to U.S. presidential inaugurations, State Department records dating back to 1874 indicate that no foreign head of state has ever attended such a ceremony.

U.S.-China relations were tense during Trump’s first term, marked by a trade war in which Trump imposed tariffs on many Chinese imports, prompting retaliatory measures from Beijing. Ahead of his new term, Trump has threatened to once again raise tariffs on Chinese goods.
