Public trust in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has increased by 10% as tensions escalate between him and U.S. President Donald Trump.
A survey released today by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) shows that Zelensky’s approval rating now stands at 67%, up from 57% on February 19.
The poll, conducted between February 14 and March 4, coincided with a period of sharp deterioration in relations between Zelensky and Trump. The tensions peaked in a heated public exchange at the White House on February 28.
According to KIIS researchers, the U.S. administration’s criticism of Zelensky has actually strengthened his domestic support.
“At least for now, we are witnessing a sense of national unity in the face of new challenges Ukraine is confronting,” said Anton Grushetsky, executive director of KIIS. He added that Ukrainians perceive Trump’s remarks not only as personal attacks on Zelensky but as broader attacks on Ukraine as a whole.
KIIS reported that approval ratings were relatively consistent across the country, though slightly lower in the eastern regions, where Zelensky's support stood at 60%. Nationally, 29% of respondents said they did not trust the president, an 8% drop from the previous poll on February 19.
On February 18, Trump claimed that Zelensky’s approval rating was just 4%, though he did not provide a source. The U.S. president also called for Ukraine to hold a presidential election, despite the country being under martial law, which currently prohibits elections.
A day later, Trump escalated his rhetoric, calling Zelensky a "non-elected dictator." In response, Zelensky accused Trump of being trapped in a "Russian misinformation bubble."
Tensions culminated on February 28 when Trump and Vice President JD Vance engaged in a public confrontation with Zelensky in the Oval Office. The meeting ended abruptly, with Trump instructing Zelensky to leave early, scrapping plans to sign a mineral resource agreement.
On March 3, Trump further escalated pressure on Kyiv by suspending military aid to Ukraine. This prompted Zelensky to soften his stance, signaling a willingness to sign the mineral deal and outlining a potential ceasefire framework with Russia.
KIIS noted that the survey was nearly complete when the U.S. aid suspension was announced, meaning its impact was not fully reflected in the results. However, researchers said the decision would likely "influence public sentiment moving forward."
