Zelensky Suggests Trading His Presidency for Ukraine’s NATO Membership Amid U.S. Calls for Resignation
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he would be willing to give up his position if it meant securing NATO membership for Ukraine, responding to growing calls from U.S. officials suggesting he should step down.
"If I could trade my position for Ukraine’s NATO membership, I would do it. Only then would I have fulfilled my duty," Zelensky said during a press conference at Stansted Airport in the UK when asked about his previous comments on being "ready to resign."
His remarks came after a European summit on Ukraine in London, hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The statement also follows Zelensky’s heated confrontation with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, which led several American lawmakers and officials to suggest that he should resign if he refuses to comply with Washington's demands.
Push for Zelensky’s Resignation Grows in U.S.
Zelensky acknowledged that removing him from office wouldn't be easy. "This process would not only require holding an election during wartime but also blocking me from running—and that is even more difficult," he said.
Mike Waltz, U.S. National Security Advisor, stated on March 2 that Washington needs a leader "who can work with the U.S., negotiate a deal with Russia, and end the war," accusing Zelensky of "not being ready for peace."
Several Republican lawmakers, including Senator Lindsey Graham and House Speaker Mike Johnson, have publicly suggested that Zelensky should step down. Graham described last week’s White House meeting as a "complete disaster."
"He either needs to resign, send someone we can work with, or change his approach," Graham said.
Zelensky Fires Back
During his press conference at Stansted Airport, Zelensky sarcastically responded to Graham’s remarks, offering the senator Ukrainian citizenship so that his opinions on Ukraine’s leadership would carry more weight.
"If he becomes a Ukrainian citizen, I will listen to his opinions about who should be president," Zelensky said.
Last week’s White House dispute nearly collapsed the U.S.-Ukraine alliance that had been built over the past three years, derailing a planned mineral agreement between the two nations.
Despite the tensions, Zelensky reaffirmed his respect for Trump and the American people. However, he insisted that he has no reason to apologize for the confrontation, saying that both sides had a "frank and open discussion." He admitted that the Oval Office chaos "didn’t help either country."
