Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he does not owe an apology to U.S. President Donald Trump following their heated exchange at the White House.
"I believe we must be very open and honest. I don’t think we did anything wrong," Zelensky told Fox News in an exclusive interview on February 28, shortly after his tense meeting with Trump in the Oval Office.
When host Bret Baier asked whether he owed Trump an apology, Zelensky firmly responded, "No."
The Ukrainian leader emphasized his respect for both Trump and the American people, even after their fiery debate. He stressed that he does not want to lose U.S. support, adding that it would be very difficult for Kyiv to stand against Moscow without Washington’s help.
"That’s why I’m here, that’s why we’re talking about future negotiations. It will be tough without your support," he said.
Despite the tensions, Zelensky expressed hope that relations with the U.S. could still improve and urged Trump to stand more firmly with Ukraine.
White House Showdown Ends in Conflict
Earlier that day, Trump told Zelensky that he must "compromise" in a ceasefire deal with Russia. But Zelensky pushed back, insisting that Ukraine would not surrender its sovereignty or agree to concessions.
The meeting escalated quickly, with both leaders raising their voices before it erupted into a full-blown argument. Trump and Vice President JD Vance accused Zelensky of being "ungrateful" and "disrespectful."
Following the clash, Zelensky left the White House earlier than planned, and both sides canceled a scheduled press conference. The highly anticipated mineral deal between the U.S. and Ukraine was also left unsigned.
Reactions After the Fallout
After leaving the White House, Zelensky posted a message on social media, thanking America for its support and for the opportunity to meet with Trump.
Meanwhile, Trump downplayed the dispute, saying the two had a "meaningful discussion," but claimed that Zelensky was "not yet ready for peace."
Before the meeting, Trump had expressed optimism, saying he expected it to be "harmonious and productive" and described the mineral deal as "a great opportunity" for Ukraine.
